I Just Saw That There’s An Approved Condom For Anal. Have I Been Using The Wrong Ones?

For those of you who don’t know about the approved condom for anal sex this article might help.

For years we’ve been telling people to use condoms for anal sex to help prevent the spread of STIs, but technically speaking there were no condoms that had been FDA approved for anal sex. This doesn’t mean that you were using the “wrong ones” or that the ones you were using were bad – I’m assuming here that you were not using natural skin condoms. Those are pretty ineffective at preventing STIs.

Confused by approved for vaginal sex but not for anal sex? Let me explain it this way. Condoms made from nitrile, latex, or polyisoprene, the kind of condoms you’re typically going to find on a store shelf, have been approved for vaginal sex and can say that they can help to prevent pregnancy and STI transmission.

But before this week, no condom manufacturer had previously applied  to the FDA to be approved for use for anal sex. ONE® didn’t create a brand new condom just for FDA approval for anal sex. Instead they submitted documentation showing that their condoms are effective for anal sex (meaning there wasn’t a lot of slippage), and so now they can put on their condoms labels that the condoms are both effective and safe for use during anal sex.

So if you were worried about using the “wrong ones” I wouldn’t worry so much. As long as they’re not natural skin condoms they’ll be helpful in preventing STI transmission during anal sex.

Until next time, be safe and have fun!
