Is There a Difference Between a Dildo and a Vibrator?

Is There a Difference Between a Dildo and a Vibrator?

Yes, and that difference can be summed up in one word – power.

Vibrators have a power source of some sort that make them vibrate. The type of power source it has could limit how you can use it. If it’s a plug into the wall while you use it vibrator, then it is definitely not safe for shower sex!

A dildo, which is  usually phallic shaped, is any object that can be used for sexual stimulation. The only way it moves is if you (or your partner) move it. There’s no power source.

But a note of caution – when I say any object can be used for stimulation - just because it can be used doesn’t mean it should be! Just go online and you’ll find things labeled as dildos that definitely can cause harm if inserted into the vagina or the anus.

And that’s actually one of the things that dildos and vibrators have in common, there’s no real regulation of them (The FDA regulates devices used to treat medical issues, but not ones used for pleasure. So while there is an FDA approved vibrating/stimulator for men with erectile dysfunction, that’s not what I’m focusing on here). In terms of vibrators and dildos, while you may see phrases like “medical grade” and “FDA approved materials” the objects themselves aren’t regulated.

This means that there are a lot of vibrators and dildos on the market that can cause problems.

You ever see those jelly dildos? Yeah, they’re not so safe. That jelly material is porous, which means that bacteria and viruses can live in it. Porous materials are super hard to clean and that means there’s a chance that using them can be bad for your health.

Vibrators can also be made from questionable materials, and I would suggest avoiding anything that’s PVC or jelly based.

What materials should you look for? Medical grade silicone, glass, ABS plastic, stainless steel and something marked as phthalate-free.

Here’s another thing that dildos and vibrators have in common – they both need to be cleaned and cleaned well! What you use to clean your sex toy depends on what materials your sex toy is made of. And once you clean it make sure to store it somewhere it’ll stay clean.

Until next time, have fun and be safe!
