Is Semen Production Affected By Age?

Yes, and so is sperm production.

Most people tend to think semen and sperm are the same thing, but they’re not, so let me start by explaining the difference. Semen is the fluid that you see when a guy ejaculates. It’s made up of a lot things, including mucus, fructose, and amino acids. It can also contain sperm if the testes are working properly.

Sperm only makes up about 4 – 5% of semen. If for some reason his testes aren’t producing sperm, or if he’s had a vasectomy, he’ll still ejaculate, there just won’t be any sperm in it. And in case you’re wondering, he won’t really notice a difference in the amount he ejaculates if there’s no sperm.

While the results of studies on this subject vary on the exact age, starting in his 40s a guy might start to see a decrease in the amount of ejaculate he sees.

The sperm he’s producing might also start to decline in both quality and quantity as he ages.

But this does not mean he still can’t get someone pregnant!

Though not common, we’ve seen men become fathers well into their 80s and 90s. If your partner is still able to get pregnant, and that’s not something you want, then you need to make sure that you’re using a reliable contraceptive every time you have vaginal intercourse, regardless if you’re 26 or 76.

STI transmission is also an issue regardless of age, so if that’s a concern make sure you’re using an internal or external condom for anal, oral and vaginal sex.

Until next time, be safe and have fun!
