Can You Get Lyme Disease From Sex?

This question is a little odd because not only did it get submitted through my website, but it also came up in a conversation with friends. Did something happen recently that’s suddenly causing people to talk about this?

People tell me that I’m not supposed to just give the answer at the beginning, because then people won’t read the whole thing. I’m not a fan of that. I think if you’re reading this, you want an answer. And the answer is no. Lyme disease can’t be spread through sex.

When most people think of Lyme disease, they think of ticks. And ticks are part of the infection process. But Lyme disease is actually caused by a bacterial infection from a tick bite.

So it makes sense for people to think that a bacterial infection can be spread through sex.

After all, a lot of the Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) that we hear about are bacterial. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis all fall into that category.

And some research has shown that the bacteria that causes Lyme disease has been found in vaginal fluid and semen. But that doesn’t mean it can be transmitted through sex.

So Lyme disease can’t be spread through sex. It also can’t be spread through physical contact or kissing.

Until next time, be safe and have fun!
