Why Do Women Wear Panties? It Seems Really Uncomfortable.
I want to start by thanking you for the question. Because this may seem like a really obvious question, but I don’t think many people have thought about it, and I’m not sure we ever teach people why they should wear underwear.
Can anyone actually remember learning the answer to this or is it something you just do?
People of all sexes should wear underwear for a few reasons. One is because it can help with friction. Whether you have a penis or a vulva, the genitals can be sensitive. Underwear tends to be a softer fabric. It can be more comfortable for our genitals to come into contact with our underwear as opposed to our other clothing.
Another reason people wear underwear is to absorb anything that may be coming out of their genitals. Think everything from sweat to secretions. If you’re wearing underwear it gets stopped there instead of getting on your clothes. This can also help with controlling smell if there is any coming from your genitals.
Underwear can also help to stop infection, depending on what kind of underwear it is. Underwear that is slightly looser is better. I don’t mean sagging, but not super tight. Underwear made from fabric that is breathable can help to limit the risk of infections. Think fabrics like cotton. Some infections thrive in moist areas, so if the underwear can pull the moisture away, that can help limit infections.
When it comes to panties for women there are lots of different kinds, and I'm not going to spend the time going into how many different types and materials there are. What I do want to focus on are the types that can be helpful for someone's vaginal health.
Period underwear can be a great alternative for women who are on their period, who don’t want to use tampons or pads. For those of you who don’t know, you can use FSA and HSA funds to pay for period underwear.
As I mentioned before, breathable fabric is best for vaginal health.
There were a lot of stories about women wearing thongs and G strings getting infections. There’s really no data to support that. Though I would point out there haven’t been a ton of studies on this. With that said if you've switched to G strings or thongs and you find that you are getting more infections, it's not a bad idea to stop wearing them.
Now if you're asking why women wear very tight panties, or frilly panties, or fancy panties, or any other panties that may seem uncomfortable to you, it could be for any number of reasons. Many women wear tight underwear because some women’s clothing isn’t cut with a lot of extra space. This would make it difficult to wear things like boxers or boy shorts underneath.
Some women wear underwear like this to turn on their partner.
And some women wear underwear like this for themselves, because it makes them feel sexy or confident, or both.
Until next time, be safe, and have fun!
