Is It Really In A Man’s Nature To “Spread His Seed” (Sleep With Lots Of Women)?

Is It Really In A Man’s Nature To “Spread His Seed” (Sleep With Lots Of Women)?

From a biological and evolutionary perspective, there is an argument to be made for this.

But don’t stop reading!

Because humans are more than just a biological or evolutionary drive. And that’s important to keep in mind. Especially today.

Let me explain a little more.

First and foremost, not all men want to sleep with women. Which is one of the reasons to question the biological drive argument.

The argument that it’s better for men to “spread their seed” is that their genetics then have a better chance of outliving them.

If a man can get 20 women pregnant in one year, then that’s 20 chances the man has that there will be a child with their DNA that survives past them. But this is a pretty archaic way of looking at it.

Why? Because we’re humans, not just animals who feel a biological need for their genes to live on. For many men it’s not just about having as many children as possible, it’s about being present in their children’s lives to take on the role of father.

And if a man is gong to spread his seed AND play the role of father, he has to have a lot of resources to do that. This includes things like time, money, and the ability to foster a healthy relationship with each child.

And this is why I said earlier that we’re more than just our biological and evolutionary drives. Today more and more people are choosing to be childfree. People are thinking about what they actually want as adults. Not just repeating what was done in the generations before them. And not just being driven by biology.

People today are thinking about whether or not they want to be parents. And even if they do want kids, people today are wondering if the world as it exists now is one they want to bring children into.

So while yes, there may be an argument that a man has a biological drive to spread his seed, that doesn’t mean he has to do so. It’s not like it will cause him physical pain or injury if he doesn’t sleep with a lot of women. Though it may hurt his ego and his self-image if he thinks that what “men” are supposed to do.

And to be honest, I worry when people claim that their behavior is driven by a need that they can’t control. Being able to think about our actions and control what we do is one of the things that separates humans from other animals.

Until next time, be safe, and have fun!
