Why Your Penis May Not Be All One Color
I've gotten a couple of questions about penis color so I thought it would be easiest to answer them together.
But for those of you who may be looking for your specific question, here’s what was submitted:
Question 1
Why is the shaft of my penis two different colors? The top half of the shaft is a lighter tan and the bottom half is a darker tan. There is a dark brown line at the point where the two colors change.
Question 2
Why is there a line that goes around the shaft of my penis? There is also a color difference above and below the line.
When someone asks me about a line on their penis, I usually ask a series of questions.
First: does it go around the penis? If no, if it’s just on the bottom, then it may be the penile raphe. This looks, and often feels, like a seam of skin. It’s really common and totally normal. It may or may not be the same color as the rest of the penis.
This brings me to question two. If they tell me the line goes around the penis, and isn’t just on the underside, I ask if there’s a color change above and below the line.
If they say yes to that, then that could just be their penis. Many men have some kind of variation in the color of their penis.
The penis may become different colors when he get excited, due to the blood running to the penis. So it can be normal to see color variation when erect compared to when limp.
My third question is: are they circumcised?
Circumcision can leave that different color ring around the penis. It’s nothing to worry about. And again, the different colors above and below may also be normal.
Regardless of the answers to my first few questions, my last questions are: Is this a new thing? And also, is it not a specific line? Is it more blotchy or spotty?
If the answers to either of these are a yes then I would encourage them to see a health care provider. While it may be nothing to be concerned about, only a health care provider who can actually see it will be able to determine that.
If you recently had trauma to the penis and/or balls, and there’s bruising go get that checked out. Now! Bruising and swelling, especially in the balls, can be a sign of a serious problem that needs immediate medical attention.
Bottom line, if the color difference has always been there then I wouldn’t worry about it. That may just be what your penis looks like.
Until next time, be safe, and have fun!
