Why Are Testicles On The Outside And Ovaries Are Internal? External Reproductive Organs Seem Like A Major Misstep In Anatomy.
There’s a really good reason why men’s testicles are on the outside. And you mentioned it. It’s a reproductive one.
Ideal sperm production happens at a couple of degrees below core body temperature. So, if the testicles were inside the body, there would be no reproduction.
This is why the scrotum moves up and down based on temperature.
Think about it, when it’s really cold, where are your testicles? Up close to the body, right?
And when it’s warmer out, the scrotum may hang a little lower.
And the body does adjust where the testicles are based on things like fear, and excitement.
But it cannot move them out of the way to prevent them from being hit.
Women’s ovaries are inside the body, because there was never an evolutionary reason for them to move outside.
And here’s the thing about evolution. (And please know that I say this with very little evolutionary biology knowledge beyond the basics in undergrad). It’s kind of a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” kind of thing. If you get hit in the nuts, does it hurt? Probably!
Does it prevent you from having children? Probably not?
So being on the outside definitely makes testicles vulnerable. But it’s not enough of a design flaw that it’s preventing the next generation from being born. From an evolutionary perspective that means there’s no reason for the body to change.
Until next time, be safe, and have fun!
